INL Representatives Visited Medical Forensic Examination

Vakhtang Kargareteli, deputy Head of LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensic Bureau, and other representatives of the Bureau, hosted Sara Rupert, Director of U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Tbilisi and Larry Fokas, INL Police Adviser. In the course of the meeting, the participants discussed the renewal of the preparation for obtaining accreditation by the Forensic Medical Examination Department of the Bureau, as a result of which the Forensic Medical Examination Department shall be accredited by National Association of Medical Examiners – NAME, USA.

Medical Experts Participate in Training

On 21-26 October, 2021 in cooperation with the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau, the Office of the Public Defender of Georgia and the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, training was held for medical forensic experts of the Bureau on the topic: "On forensic medical examination of victims of sexual violence." Forensic medical examination plays an important role in the administration of criminal justice in criminal cases. When conducting these types of examinations, special care should be taken towards victims of sexual violence in order to avoid secondary victimization.

Bureau Successfully Re-accredited.

LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensic Bureau successfully passed the re-accreditation in 2021 and obtained the ISO 17025: 2017/2018 quality certificate. The Bureau obtained its first accreditaion in accordance with ISO 17025 in August 2013. According to the accreditation procedures, the accreditation is valid for a period of 4 years, while the National Accreditation Center assessors conduct the annual quality monitoring at the Bureau which verifies compliance with the standard of the areas accredited. The National Forensic Bureau is equipped with advanced laboratories in line with international standards. Since 2013, the Bureau has been a full member of ENFSI, the European Network of Forensic Institutions, the most authoritative international organization in the field of forensic science. More than 500 types of forensic examinations in traditional and new areas are performed by 300 qualified experts at the Bureau.

Georgian Laboratories Association Online Conference

On 18 October 2021, Bela Gabitashvili, Head of the Quality Control and International Relations Department, Bureau, and Tamar Aptsiauri, Head of the Food, Tobacco, Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Examination Unit, participated in the Global Quality and Standards Program (GQSP) organized by the Georgian Association of Laboratories. The conference focused on "Strengthening the Conformity Assessment for the Fruit and Vegetable Value Chain", where participants discussed the achievements of expert laboratories in Georgia, their plans and strengthening of both local and international laboratory testing. The participants of the online meeting also got acquainted with the news and challenges initiated by international partners and members of the organization. LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau actively participates in international conferences and professional meetings on annual basis which ensures the introduction of modern research methods and innovations in the Bureau.
