Bureau identified remains of 5 soldiers fallen in the war of Abkhazia

LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensic Bureau has identified remains of 5 persons gone missing during the armed conflict in Abkhazia. Pavle Giorgadze, Deputy Head of the Bureau, Tea Akhvlediani, State Minister of Georgia for Reconciliation and Civic Equality, and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation met with family members of soldiers fallen in Abkhazia. Georgian soldiers will be buried with military l honors on 14 August, 2021. The process of identifying the remains of the heroes, with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross, began in September 2013 and continues to this day. Within the framework of the agreement between the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRS) and the Bureau, in order to identify persons gone missing during armed conflict of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, 3780 DNA samples have been taken from family members of persons gone missing. Out of this, 3389 samples have been genotyped for further identification of the deceased.

Universal Vaccination at the Bureau

As of today, almost 60 percent of the staff of the Bureau have been fully vaccinated and 10 percent of the staff have been vaccinated with a first dose of coronavirus vaccines registered in Georgia - Sinopharm, Sinovac, Pfizer and AstraZeneca. It should be noted that the staff of the Bureau Regional Offices of Western Georgia, Adjara, Kakheti, Shida Kartli, Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti are actively involved in the vaccination process. Vaccination against COVID 19 is an important process to improve the epidemiological situation in the country. The vaccine prevents the life-threatening infectious disease from spreading and helps return to normal life. The process of vaccination of Bureau staff will continue actively until the vaccination is completed.

Statement of the Bureau

On 25 July 2022, the statement of Post Factum show on Mtavari TV channel that the body of the deceased cameraman, Lexo Lashkarava was brought into the Bureau 1 hour and 15 minutes late is not true. TV Pirveli deceased cameraman Lekso Lashkarava was brought into the Bureau on 11:18 a.m. 11 July 2021 and was registered in accordance with relevant procedures. Footage broadcast live by one of the TV stations shows that the body of Lexo Lashkarava was placed in a specialized car at around 11:00 a.m. Therefore, the body was taken to the bureau few minutes later, as evidenced by camera footage, as well as a corresponding protocol. A few journalists, who were reporting the case of the deceased cameraman from the vicinity of the Forensic Medical Examination Department, were immediately informed about this fact by the Bureau Press Center.

LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensic Bureau hosted Özge Sütlü, representative of the Institute of Forensic Sciences and Legal medicine, Istanbul, which is a member of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI). Özge Sütlü visited questioned document and handwriting examination, criminalistic, DNA and forensic medical examination laboratories equipped with modern technologies in accordance with the international standards and got acquainted with current research activities from the experts. LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensic Bureau is a leading expert institution in the forensic field in the region. The Bureau is accredited in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 Standard. The quality control system implemented in the Bureau ensures the accuracy, validity and trustworthiness of examination results.
