The Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Unit of the Department of Chemical and Narcological Examination at the National Forensic Bureau has received 4 samples from Drug Working Group of ENFSI within the framework of annual proficiency testing. Specifically, the samples included drugs - herbal powder containing tetrahydrocannabinol, amphetamine, cocaine and N-Ethylhexedrone - stimulant of the cathinone class. Along with the Bureau, 69 European laboratories participated in the proficiency testing.
ENFSI proficiency test involves determining the qualitative and quantitative content of drugs, psychotropic and new psychoactive substances in powders of unknown composition. In addition to the analysis results, participating laboratories are also required to determine the anionic composition of the active components, assess the uncertainty of measurement and statistically process the data. The Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Unit determined qualitative features and anionic composition of these substances, both qualitative and quantitative content of cocaine powder.
The following criteria were used for statistical evaluation of proficiency testing: mean ± 2SD, mean ± 10%, mean ± 5%, uncertainty, En number and Z criterion. The Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Unit successfully passed the test again, and received first category evaluation Z-score “-0.18“ (preferred Z rating norm <2).
It is noteworthy that interns of the Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Unit also participated in the preparation of samples, qualitative analysis and interpretation of the results of the current professional testing.
The Forensic Chemistry and Toxicology Unit at the Department of Chemical and Narcological Examination of National Forensic Bureau has been participating in proficiency tests (ENFSI, UNODC, EDQM-STRASBOURG) since 2010 on annual basis and has always occupied top positions. According to the data of the current year, as well as results of tests conducted across Europe and statistical evaluation of the analysis results, the National Forensic Bureau is among leading laboratories. The obtained results indicate high qualification of the Bureau experts, application of valid methods and compliance to international standards.
