On October 26, 2018, Head of Forensic Biology Department of LEPL - Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau Nino Kochiashvili and an expert of the above mentioned department, Nino Phirtskhelani participated at the 5th International Conference on Oncology, organized by Georgian Cancer Research Group (GCSG), along with leading British scientist group of medical genetic and cancer epidemiologists, the event was held in Hotel Radisson Blue Iveria. Experts presented report regarding the detection of BRCA mutations in Georgian patients. The existence of BRCA gene mutations may cause high risk of various forms of inherited breast cancer. The topics discussed at the conference were the risk management of breast cancer development in Georgia, issues of oncoplastic surgery, screening and family history. International collaborations have been planned in order to engage Georgian patients in research surveys.
It is noteworthy, that the Bureau was one of the first to start molecular-genetic study of human DNA in order to identify various inherited diseases, including breast cancer, in 2008 and maintains leading position in DNA research field in Georgia.
