ImageOn May 19, 2014, LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau inaugurated a new Mitochondrial DNA Laboratory.
Head of the Bureau, Giorgi Tvauri, Minister of Justice, Tea Tsulikiani, Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Regions and Refugees, Davit Darakhvelidze and other representatives of the government, as well as, the representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office and US Embassy attended the opening ceremony. 
Forensic DNA examination is one of the leading fields of the National Forensics Bureau and its laboratory is furnished with the latest equipments. 
The DNA Laboratory of the Bureau is a unique lab across the region. 
In 2014, The National Forensics Bureau will operate a new Mitochondrial DNA Laboratory, which will further extend the examination fields of the Bureau.
The new laboratory will provide experts with a possibility to conduct new types of expertise, suck as retreating DNA material from outage or degraded samples. They will also be able to identify related links from the mothers line. Having a comparable sample, a person identification now becomes possible with a hair sample. It is noteworthy that the DNA laboratory of the Bureau is actively engaged in the identification process of the soldiers fallen in.
