Public perceptions of the narcotic drugs varies: some demand legalization of cannabis, while others refer it to crime. LEPL Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau is the only institution in Georgia which conducts a chemical examination of the toxic substances, pharmaceuticals, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. Laboratory of Forensics Narcotics, Toxic Substances, Pharmaceuticals and Chemical-Toxicology performs the following examinations:
• Qualitative-quantitative examination of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in biological objects (blood, urine, sperm, hair, internal organs), powders, syringes and other substances;
• Identifying quality parameters of the drugs in accordance with the normative-technical documentation;
• Phytochemical and botanical examination of narcotic drugs, toxic and medicinal plants;
• Identifying kinds of conventional cannabis – Cannabis sativa;
• Examination of synthetic cannabinoid in powders, plant breeds and biological materials (blood, urine);
• Examination of toxic substances and toxic chemicals in biological objects and other objects presented to expertise;
• Identifying alcohol in biological objects (blood, urine, muscle);
• Examination of the narcotic drugs powder, a so-called profile assessment in order to identify their origin;
• Chemical-toxicological analysis of pills, powders and fluids of unknown composition.

Forensics Chemical-Toxicology Laboratory is accredited by ISO/IES 17025 and operates in compliance with international standards.
Experts of the Forensics Chemical-Toxicology Laboratory annually participate in international qualification tests organized by the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNOCD).
Based on the results of the qualification test conducted this year, the Bureau shares the first place with one of the world leading laboratory.
